Renal Function Test (RFT) – Renal Profile
RFT also known as kidney function test is a group of tests used to evaluate the functions of the kidney. It is used to detect, evaluate and monitor acute and chronic kidney disease.
Renal Function Test is ordered by the doctor when,
- The kidneys aren’t working properly which is known from the signs and symptoms
- and if a patient has other conditions that affect the kidneys – Diabetes, Hypertension.
Signs and symptoms related to kidney problems :
Lethargy and weakness, Increased urge to urinate, Foamy urine (due to presence of protein in urine), Persistent puffiness especially around the eyes, Poor appetite, Muscles cramping, blood in urine.
RFT plays a vital role in chronic kidney diseases due to Diabetes and hypertension. Kidney function tests have uses in identifying the presence of kidney disease, monitoring the response of kidneys to the treatment and determining the progression of the disease.
To assess Kidney disease the following Serum parameters are evaluated.
- Serum Urea
- Serum Creatinine
- Serum Calcium
- Other electrolytes like Sodium, Potassium, Phosphorus
