On this women’s day, let’s do our bit to generate more awareness on autoimmunity in women, prevention and diagnosis to help her lead a happy and healthy life!

Why are women more prone?

Research estimates that women are two times more prone to autoimmune diseases than men. Though the exact mechanism is unclear, scientists have briefed two possible reasons explaining why women are more prone than men.

  1. Genetics: The larger number of genes originating from the X chromosome (women have two while men have one) creates a far greater possibility of a larger number of mutations occurring, putting women at a greater risk for the development of autoimmune diseases
  2. Hormonal changes: Autoimmune diseases tend to affect women during major endocrine transitions, such as puberty, pregnancy, and menopause. Women typically experience more hormonal changes than men, making autoimmune diseases more prevalent in this population.

Women are also more likely to be diagnosed with multiple autoimmune disorders.
